“If this is not Paradise, What Is”
Cwmiar’s cottages are not merely a base to come back to every evening, although, of course, you can use your cottage as a luxury hotel suite if you wish, but it is a lovely location in its own right. More than one of our guests has described it as ‘second to Heaven’, which is why we love it here.
There is quite a lot around here to discover and enjoy, more than one can cover in weeks; The national butanic garden, castles that tell the history of England/Wales, Picturesque and romantic beaches, History rich Museums, Traditional Wool Mills, Gold Mines, Beautiful walks – Which start on your doorstep, Steam Railways or just Driving around in THE GARDEN OF WALES; that is what Carmarthenshire – our area – is called.
Cwmiar is part of the Llanllwni Mountain, a protected SPECIAL LANDSCAPE AREA, therefore managed to keep the most of its unspoilt natural beauty.
From Cwmair you can take lazy drive over the mountain to brechfa Forest between small hills, covered with heather and passing old stone cottages, you will believe time had stopped centuries ago.
In Brecfa Forest you can cycle, walk and enjoy a jolly relaxing -or active- time.
Walkin inside of the Brecfa Forest is a breathtaking feeling of being back to nature.
Whether alone or with family it is sure to be a fantastic experience
Cycling in the Brecfa Forest is a completely different experience but still has the characteristic feels of being back with nature
Great for all the Family
Cwmiar is also a lovely holiday destination in its own right. More than one of our guests have described it the same way, calling it a “…Second Heaven…”, Which is why we love it here
The farmstead (including the cottages) nestles in its own valley (Cwmiar means Valley of the Hen – the name of the stream which runs through the lower fields; Cwmceiliog – further round the mountain – is Valley of the Cockerel, after its own stream). A suntrap, sheltered from the wind, it is very beautiful to just walk or laze around by the millpond or the woods next to it, watching nature, sitting reading a book or the newspaper, or perhaps having a barbeque and a drink or two. In the case of Sunset View Cottage you’ll be able to enjoy that in your own garden admiring the scenery across the Teifi Valley and open countryside beyond.
The Mill House is probably the most romantic cottage to stay in; it is extremely old – the transition between a single and two-storey building – it has a spacious, galleried king size double bedroom, which overlooks the open plan living room with its impressive inglenook fireplace.
The second Small cottage is the Sunset View Cottage. It has its own garden and a stunning panoramic view over the wide open countryside. Facing west, you can enjoy a maginificent and daily changing sunset ( dont forget to bring your camera with you )
We are extremely lucky to have Cwmiar as our home, and like many of our guests we find every season has its own wonderful beauty, because everything is so natural. That special green of the new shoots coming through in spring, when the lambs are gamboling about and the ponies bring their foals down from further up the mountain to shelter in the valley, and our pretty Welsh Black cows are bringing their adorable calves, like fluffy teddy bears, into the world.
Then in the summer there is the heady scent of gorse, and the evening sunshine turning everything to gold. As autumn approaches the heather turns the mountain to purple, whilst in the valley below the early morning mist waits to be burnt off by the sun – absolutely glorious. A little later on the leaves start to turn from green to golden brown and the wood on the other side of the valley is adorned in such an array of colour it is a spectacle on its own.
Then those cold crisp days of winter, when the sun shines and you can wrap up warm and go out for a walk and it feels great to be alive; even when it rains and the mountain is draped in cloud like a mysterious shroud, you can light a fire and curl up on the sofa with a good book in the knowledge that the hustle and bustle of daily life is a million miles away. Perhaps the rain will turn to snow and you can go out onto the yard and build a snowman!
